Botany a classical
subject, has in expanded into modern fields of biological sciences
such as Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, and classical
subjects such as plant diversity, taxonomy, anatomy, etc., with
great importance in the global scenario. Any person with knowledge
in the above fields can shine in any branch of biological science.
The Modern Botany has job and research potential. |

The Botany Laboratory
is sufficiently equipped to Postgraduate and the Research standard.
The laboratory has two aseptic chambers for Plant tissue culture
and Microbial studies. The laboratory is also well suited for
studies as marine algae, anatomy, plant physiology and biochemistry
and ecology. The Department has an arboretum that conserves endangered
species of endemic plants. |
| |
|
| a) Areas of Research : |
Marine Algae, Aqua culture, Plant Tissue
Culture, Microbiology,
Ecology, Plant Anatomy, Plant Physiology, Biochemistry, Cytology,
Plant Reproductive Biology. |
| |
| b) Ongoing external funded projects: |
An arboretum has
been newly established with financial assistances Rs. 11,30000
from the Ministry of Environment and Forest conserving rare, endemic
and threatened plants. The project was successfully completed
by Dr. V.Veeragurunathan, Principal Investigator and Dr.R.Vellaiyan,
Co-Investigator of this project. Nearly 75 rare medicinal plants
are conserved in the Net house and Polythene house and 53 medicinal
seeds are maintained in the seed chamber for their germplasm storage.
The established arboretum is being tended and enriched by the
Management of the College. |
