| Biochemistry
today occupies a central position in teaching and research in
all biological and biomedical sciences and it is a rapidly expanding
area. It is the study of the chemistry of living systems. It helps
to understand the molecular events, which induce all biological
processes.
The findings of Biochemistry are applied in many important
areas of medicine (drug designing), agriculture and industry.
Researchers in agriculture, pharmaceuticals and environmental
science need sound knowledge of biochemistry. Recent advances
in biotechnology bioinformatics and its industrial applications
have been made possible only through an understanding of the
basic principles of biochemistry. Biochemistry in clinical diagnosis,
a fertile field for self-employment.

Linkages for Research
|
| The Department has a strong research
bias in Post Graduate Studies. Students should undertake research
projects in the final semester. To cater to the needs of the large
number of PG students aspiring for Industrial / Research Institutional
exposure for their research activities, linkages have been developed
with a wide range of organizations. They are listed below: |
| |
| 1. Institutes |
- Central Food Technology and Research Institute, Mysore.
- Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hydrabad.
- Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai.

A national Symposium on Medical Plants funded by ICMR was
organized by the Department in 2008 to bring the persons who
are engaged bioresearch, development, cultivation, conservation
and utilization of Indian medicinal plants to share their
findings and experience with others and to determine the future
strategies. An ICMR Sponsored National Symposium on Scope
and Opportunities in Medicinal Plant Research was conducted
in 2005.
The Department, organized a National Conference in August
2008 on the Prospects and Challenges of Green Medicine in
ensuring the Health Security of the Rural Population in India.
